What is Sundal?
Sundal is one of the most commonly made dish for Navratri and different festivals in Tamilnadu. Pattani sundal is a quick and easy recipe if you pre-plan and soak the dried yellow or white peas.
When you have the Sundal Podi handy, this can be made very quickly. You can try this sundal for festivals or serve it as evening snacks. This can be packed as snacks for school kids too.
Railway Recipes
I have fond memories of eating this sundal while travelling in train. I always love the different foods from train pantry/station and look forward to eating it while travelling. When Seema suggested railway recipes as theme, I had different ideas but finally made this simple sundal recipe. My partner Kalyani made the mouthwatering Railway style Aloo Bhaji.
Ingredients
- Dried peas/pattani - Soak dried yellow or white peas and pressure cook it
- Sundal Podi - Spicy masala which makes the sundal flavorful
- Coconut - optional but highly recommended.
- Tempering - Temper with mustard, urad dal, hing, red chilli, and curry leaves

Instructions
Soak dried peas for 6-8 hours or overnight.
Take peas in a pressure cooker along with water and salt. Cook for 2 whistles
Drain the water and keep it aside. Heat oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, red chilli, curry leaves, and hing.
Add cooked pattani to it and give a quick saute. Then add sundal masala powder to it.
Finally, add the grated coconut. Mix and switch off the flame. Delicious pattani sundal is ready
Notes
- You can use yellow or dried peas to make sundal
- You can substitute sundal podi with sambar powder.
- Adjust the sundal podi and coconut according to your taste.
- Don't overcook the peas as it will turn mushy.
- You can use the water used for cooking in curries.
- You can pressure cook and refrigerate and make this quickly for evening snacks.
Pattani Sundal
Ingredients
- Double Beans ½ cup
- Sundal masala powder 2-3 tsp
- Coconut 1-2 tbsp
To Temper
- Oil 2 tsp
- Mustard ½ tsp
- Urad dal ¼ tsp
- Curry leaves few
- Red chilli 1
- Hing 2-3 pinch
Instructions
- Soak pattani for 8 hours or overnight.
- Pressure cook the beans for 2 whistles in a pressure cooker.
- Heat oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, red chilli, curry leaves, and hing.
- Add cooked peas to it and give a quick saute.
- Then add sundal masala powder to it.
- Finally add the grated coconut.
- Mix and switch off the flame
- Pattani sundal is ready.
