Broken wheat pongal is simple and quick breakfast recipe made with broken wheat and moong dal. Pongal is one of the classic breakfast from South India. Bowl of Pongal with sambar and chutney along with vada and filter coffee is must try when you visit South Indian restaurants.
Broken wheat pongal is one pot dish which is healthy, nutritious and filling. Method of preparation is similar to Ven/Khara pongal made with rice. Drizzle ghee and enjoy them hot with sambar, gotsu or chutney. Broken wheat is high in fiber and very good for people with diabetes. Spicy Broken Wheat Pongal | Dhaliya Pongal recipe | Samba Godhumai Khara Pongal
Ingredients
- Broken wheat ½ cup
- Moong dal ¼ cup
- Water 2 ¼ cup
- Turmeric powder ½ tsp optional
- Salt 1 tsp or as required
To Temper
- Ghee 1.5 tbsp
- Cumin 1 tsp
- Pepper 1 tsp crushed
- Ginger 1 tsp finely chopped
- Green chilli 2 optional
- Curry leaves few
- Hing ¼ tsp
- Cashews 8-10 optional
Instructions
- Heat ghee in pressure cooker and add cumin, pepper, ginger, green chilli, curry leaves, hing and cashews if using
- once it browns add water and allow it to boil
- Now add turmeric powder and salt.
- Once it boils add washed moong dal and dhaliya.
- Close the lid and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
- Once the pressure releases open the lid and mix it.
- Broken wheat pongal is ready

How to make Broken Wheat Pongal with step by step pictures

Now add turmeric powder and salt.
