Broken wheat pongal is one pot dish which is healthy, nutritious and filling. Method of preparation is similar to Ven/Khara pongal made with rice. Drizzle ghee and enjoy them hot with sambar, gotsu or chutney. Broken wheat is high in fiber and very good for people with diabetes. Broken wheat pongal is simple and quick breakfast recipe made with broken wheat and moong dal.

Ingredients

  • Broken wheat 1/2 cup
  • Moong dal 1/4 cup
  • Water 2 1/4 cup
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp optional
  • Salt 1 tsp or as required
  • To Temper
  • Ghee 1.5 tbsp
  • Cumin 1 tsp
  • Pepper 1 tsp crushed
  • Ginger 1 tsp finely chopped
  • Green chilli 2 optional
  • Curry leaves few
  • Hing 1/4 tsp
  • Cashews 8-10 optional

Instructions

  1. Heat ghee in pressure cooker and add cumin, pepper, ginger, green chilli, curry leaves, hing and cashews if using
  2. once it browns add water and allow it to boil
  3. Now add turmeric powder and salt.
  4. Once it boils add washed moong dal and dhaliya.
  5. Close the lid and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
  6. Once the pressure releases open the lid and mix it.
  7. Broken wheat pongal is ready

Notes

I skipped green chilli and cashews since I didn't have them in stock. But I love those flavors and add them regularly.

You can add some hot water to adjust consistency if it is too dry after opening the cooker. I didn't use any extra water.

You can use combination of oil and ghee or only ghee.

Adding turmeric powder is optional

How to make Broken Wheat Pongal with step by step pictures

Heat ghee in pressure cooker and add cumin, pepper, ginger, green chilli, curry leaves, hing and cashews if using

Once it boils add washed moong dal and dhaliya.

Close the lid and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. Once the pressure releases open the lid and mix it.

  • Pongal is one of my favorite dishes and I keep trying it with various grains. Cracked wheat version tastes delicious too and healthier over the traditional version..
