Vazhakkai Kola Urundai
Kola urundai is round shaped deep fried balls usually made with meat, spices and coconut. We can use lot of vegetarian options like paneer, soya, plantain etc. You can use the kola urundai to make curry too. Will share the recipe soon.
This recipe is so simple to make, and you can prepare it ahead and fry them while serving. An ideal recipe for holidays and special occasions, and perfect for impressing your guests. If you are looking for non-vegetarian version, you can try Chicken kola urundai.

Ingredients
- Vazhakkai/Raw Banana - Key ingredient of the recipe
- Roasted gram dal
- Ginger
- Garlic
- Spices - Red chilli, green chilli, fennel seeds
- Coconut

How to make Vazhakkai kola urundai with step-by-step instructions
Take roasted gram dal in a mixer.
Powder it finely and keep it aside.
Wash the raw banana trim both edges and cut into halves. Pressure cook for 2 whistles.
Remove the skin of the raw banana and keep it aside. Take small onions, green chilli, red chilli, ginger, garlic, grated coconut, fennel seeds in a mixer.
Pulse it 2-3 times and then add the cooked vazhakkai to it.
Pulse it again till it is combined.
Take it in a bowl and add the powdered gram flour to it.
Mix everything till evenly mixed.
Make some balls out of the mixture.
Heat oil in a kadai and deep fry them till golden. Drain in a kitchen tissue.
Vazhakkai kola urundai is ready.
Substitutions
- Raw Banana - can use paneer, soya, corn, banana stem for veg and mutton, chicken for non veg.
- Roasted gram flour - You can use besan flour.
Notes
- Increase the green chilli and red chilli powder if you want it spicy. This is a less spicy version for kids.
- You can shallow fry in paniyaram pan or air fryer for healthy version.
- You can steam the raw banana for 10 minutes instead of pressure cooking.
- If the dough is very sticky, you can add a little more gram flour.
- You can use besan flour instead of gram flour.
- You can grate the raw banana and mix it as well instead of pulsing.
Storage
You can make these balls ahead and keep in fridge. Fry them as and when required. It keeps good for 3-4 days in fridge or freeze them if you want to keep it longer.

Ingredients
- 4 Vazhaikai/Raw banana
- 18-20 Small onion
- ½ cup Roasted gram dal
- 2 Green chilli
- 3 Red chilli
- 10-12 Garlic small flakes
- 1.5 tsp Ginger finely chopped
- ¼ cup Grated coconut
- 1 tsp Fennel
- Salt as required
- ½ tsp Hing
- Oil for deep frying

- Powder it finely and keep it aside.
