Manathakkali Keerai Kootu Recipe | Keerai Kootu | Keerai Sambar

Keerai kootu is delicious and healthy curry made with greens and dal.

  • Greens/keerai 1 big bunch
  • Onion 1 medium
  • Tomato 1
  • Red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  • Salt as required
  • Oil 2 tsp
  • Keerai vadagam 2 tsp
  • Cooking dal
  • Moong dal 1/2 cup
  • Water 2 cups
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Hung 1/4 tsp


  • Wash the moong dal and take in pressure cooker
  • Add water, turmeric powder, hing to it and pressure cook for 1 whistle in medium and 5 minutes in slow flame.
  • Once the pressure releases open and mash the dal.
  • Heat oil in the pan and temper with keerai vadagam
  • Then add finely chopped onions and saute nicely.
  • Then add chopped tomatoes and saute till mushy.
  • Finally add the chopped keerai and saute till it shrinks little.
  • Then add salt, red chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder.
  • Add little water and allow it to cook.
  • Once it is cooked add the dal and mix
  • Bring it to boil and switch off the flame.
  • Manathakkali keerai kootu is ready.


You can use any type of keerai to make this kootu.
you can adjust the consistency as per your preference.
I always make it dry when eating as side dish for sambar or make it as semi gravy like this when eating directly with rice.
You can use toor dal instead of moong dal.
