Ellu Chutney Recipe | Sesame Seeds Chutney Recipe

Ellu chutney is south Indian condiment made with sesame seeds.

Ingredients

  • Ellu/sesame seeds¼ cup
  • Urad dal ½ tbsp
  • Chana dal 1 tbsp optional
  • Red chilli 2-4
  • Tomato 1 small
  • Garlic 3 small flakes
  • Salt as required
  • Oil 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • Coriander leaves few

To temper

  • Oil 1 tsp
  • Mustard ¼ tsp
  • Urad dal ¼ tsp
  • Curry leaves few

Instructions

  • Heat oil and add urad dal and chana dal
  • Once it browns add sesame seeds and red chilli.
  • Roast nicely till golden and then add chopped garlic and tomatoes
  • Then add curry leaves and coriander leaves to it.
  • Sauté till it shrinks and switch off the flame.
  • Once it cools down, take them in mixer.
  • Grind to fine paste adding little water.
  • Transfer to a bowl.
  • Heat oil and add ingredients given under to temper.
  • Once it browns add it to the chutney.
  • Sesame seeds chutney is ready. Serve it with idli/dosa

Notes

You can use white or black sesame seeds for the chutney
You can use green chilli instead of red chilli and tamarind instead of tomato.
Since we have not used coconut, chutney keeps well in fridge for couple of days.
