Dal Fry Recipe | How to make Dal Fry

Dal fry is one of the most popular side dishes from North India made with toor dal and spices. It is so flavorful and perfect to enjoy with jeera rice or roti

Ingredients

  • Onions 1 medium
  • Tomato 1 Big
  • Green chilli 2
  • Ginger garlic paste 1.5 tsp
  • Red chilli powder ½ tsp
  • Garam masala ½ tsp
  • Salt as required
  • Kasuri methi 2 tsp
  • Lemon ½
  • Ghee 1-2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds 1 tsp
  • Mustard ½ tsp
  • Red chilli 1
  • Coriander leaves 2-3 tbsp finely chopped

To Cook Dal

  • Toor Dal ¾ cup
  • Turmeric powder ½ tsp
  • Hing ¼ tsp
  • Water 2.5 cups

Instructions

  • Wash the toor dal.
  • Add water, turmeric powder and hing to it.
  • Pressure cook it for one whistle in medium and 5 minutes in low flame.
  • Once pressure releases, mash the dal and keep it ready.
  • Heat oil and temper with cumin seeds, mustard and red chilli.
  • Then add slit green chilli to it.
  • Next, add finely chopped onions and sauté till slightly golden.
  • Then add ginger garlic paste and sauté till the raw smell goes.
  • Then add tomatoes and sauté till mushy
  • Next, add salt, red chilli powder and garam masala to it.
  • Add little water and boil for 2-3 minutes.
  • Then add cooked dal to it.
  • Allow it to boil nicely and finally add kasuri methi.
  • Squeeze half the lemon juice.
  • Finally, add finely chopped coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
  • Delicious dal fry is ready

Notes

You can use combination of toor dal, masoor dal and moong dal.
Use ghee for tempering as it adds lot of flavor
Dal consistency should be thick unlike sambar
