Kadalai Paruppu Pooranam Kozhukattai | Chana dal Modak
Kadalai paruppu pooranam kozhukattai is steamed modaks made with rice flour and stuffed with sweet chana dal. It is commonly made during Vinayaga Chaturti and other festivals.

Ingredients
Raw rice 1.5 cups
Water 2.5 cups
Salt as required
Oil 1 tsp
Stuffing
Chana dal 1 cup
Powdered jaggery 1 cup
Cardamom powder 1 tsp
Coconut ½ cup
Salt a pinch
Instructions
Preparing stuffing
Wash and pressure cook the chana dal for 2 whistles.
Drain the water and keep it aside till it is dry
Take part of chana dal in a mixer along with powdered jaggery
Pulse it 2-3 times till it is combined.
Repeat the same for the rest of the dal and transfer to a bowl
Grate the coconut and dry roast in a pan till all moisture is absorbed.
Add salt, cardamom powder to the mixture
Then add grated coconut to the mixture
Combine everything and pooranam is ready.
Preparing dough
Wash and soak raw rice for 2-3 hours.
Drain the water and take in mixer
Adding water and grind to a smooth batter.
Take the batter in Kadai, add the remaining water and add oil to it the batter.
Mix and start cooking on a low flame.
Keep stirring the batter and it will start to thicken and form lumps.
Break the lumps and stir continuously till the dough is cooked and comes together.
Switch off the flame, close, and keep it aside for 5 minutes.
Once it is warm enough to handle break the lumps and knead to form a smooth dough.
Making Modak
Grease your hands with oil and take a small ball and flatten it. Keep a small ball of pooranam and bring it together.
Use mold and press the dough on the sides and place stuffing inside it and cover it.
Boil water in steamer or idli pot. Grease with oil or use cloth. Keep the prepared modak in it.
Close the lid and steam it for 8 to 10 minutes.
Kadalai paruppu pooranam kozhukattai is ready.
Notes
Batter should be running consistency. Add more or less water to bring it to the consistency after grinding. Dough should be smooth and always keep it covered so it won't become dry. Grease your hands with oil and make the modaks. You can use any stuffing of your choice. Adjust the jaggery in the stuffing according to your preference of sweetness.
