Chana dal, jaggery, and coconut are one of the most versatile stuffing used in Poli, suviyam, and many other dishes. I love to eat it as such too.  I have shared the traditional method of making modaks by soaking rice which yields so soft kozhukattai. You can shape them in your hands or using moulds.

Kadalai paruppu pooranam kozhukattai is steamed modaks made with rice flour and stuffed with sweet chana dal. It is commonly made during Vinayaga Chaturti and other festivals.

Ingredients

  • Raw rice 1.5 cups
  • Water 2.5 cups
  • Salt as required
  • Oil 1 tsp
  • Stuffing
  • Chana dal 1 cup
  • Powdered jaggery 1 cup
  • Cardamom powder 1 tsp
  • Coconut 1/2 cup
  • Salt a pinch

Instructions

    Preparing stuffing
  1. Wash and pressure cook the chana dal for 2 whistles.
  2. Drain the water and keep it aside till it is dry
  3. Take part of chana dal in a mixer along with powdered jaggery
  4. Pulse it 2-3 times till it is combined.
  5. Repeat the same for the rest of the dal and transfer to a bowl
  6. Grate the coconut and dry roast in a pan till all moisture is absorbed.
  7. Add salt, cardamom powder to the mixture
  8. Then add grated coconut to the mixture
  9. Combine everything and pooranam is ready.
  10. Preparing dough
  11. Wash and soak raw rice for 2-3 hours.
  12. Drain the water and take in mixer
  13. Adding water and grind to a smooth batter.
  14. Take the batter in Kadai, add the remaining water and add oil to it the batter.
  15. Mix and start cooking on a low flame.
  16. Keep stirring the batter and it will start to thicken and form lumps.
  17. Break the lumps and stir continuously till the dough is cooked and comes together.
  18. Switch off the flame, close, and keep it aside for 5 minutes.
  19. Once it is warm enough to handle break the lumps and knead to form a smooth dough.
  20. Making Modak
  21. Grease your hands with oil and take a small ball and flatten it. Keep a small ball of pooranam and bring it together.
  22. Use mold and press the dough on the sides and place stuffing inside it and cover it.
  23. Boil water in steamer or idli pot. Grease with oil or use cloth. Keep the prepared modak in it.
  24. Close the lid and steam it for 8 to 10 minutes.
  25. Kadalai paruppu pooranam kozhukattai is ready.

Notes

Batter should be running consistency. Add more or less water to bring it to the consistency after grinding.

Dough should be smooth and always keep it covered so it won't become dry.

Grease your hands with oil and make the modaks.

You can use any stuffing of your choice.

Adjust the jaggery in the stuffing according to your preference of sweetness.

How to make Chana dal Modak with step by step pictures

Preparing stuffing

Combine everything and pooranam is ready. Make small balls and keep it ready.

Adding water and grind to a smooth batter.

Take the batter in Kadai, add the remaining water and add oil to it the batter.

Mix and start cooking on a low flame.

Keep stirring the batter and it will start to thicken and form lumps.

Switch off the flame, close, and keep it aside for 5 minutes. Once it is warm enough to handle break the lumps and knead to form a smooth dough.

Making Modak

Grease your hands with oil and take a small ball and flatten it. Keep a small ball of pooranam and bring it together.

Use mold and press the dough on the sides and place stuffing inside it and cover it.

  • Another interesting variety of modakam. Give a taste of purannpoli as the stuffing is similar. I love Modakam and this has one of my favourite stuffing . Beautifully explained Narmadha.
  • We almost always make kozhukattai with a coconut and jaggery filling.. these modaks with chana dal filling are so interesting! Would love to try some time.. as always, a beautifully explained recipe. They have turned out so perfectly!
  • Kozhakattais with channa dhal filling look so juicy . The traditional way of preparing the outer covering is always fail proof Method..I will try channa dhall filling soon .
