Coconut Burfi | Thengai burfi recipe with step by step pictures and instructions. Coconut burfi is very common and simple sweet prepared using grated coconut and sugar. It is commonly called as thengai burfi in Tamil and prepared during festivals and special occasions. It is easy and quick sweet which can be prepared in 15-20 minutes. Since there is no specific consistency to check even a beginner can prepare this easily. Fresh grated coconut gives nice taste to the dish. You can use frozen or desiccated coconut when you don’t have access to fresh ones. You can add little milk in that case to make the coconut juicy.

During childhood, my mom used to prepare coconut burfi on occasions like birthday, Diwali or any special guest visit us. There are many variations of making this coconut burfi. We can use milk for more soft and juicy version. I have shared basic version which uses only coconut and sugar. Adding nuts is optional and we can skip them too. My mom used to tell it taste better with mature coconut than tender/young coconut.

Coconut burfi is very common and simple sweet prepared using grated coconut and sugar.

Ingredients

  • Coconut 2 cups
  • Sugar 1 1/2 cup
  • Ghee 1 tbsp optional
  • Cashews 1 tbsp optional
  • To garnish
  • Almonds 3 optional
  • Pista 5 optional
  • Cashews 5 optional

Instructions

  1. Grate the coconut and take them in blender
  2. Grind in the mixer. You can pulse them for few seconds.
  3. Heat ghee and add the chopped cashews
  4. Roast it till golden and keep it aside
  5. In the same ghee add the grated coconut and saute for one minute
  6. Now add the sugar and mix
  7. Keep stirring continuously in medium flame.
  8. Sugar will melt and form bubbles first.
  9. Continue stirring till it comes together as a mass
  10. Grease plate or tray with ghee
  11. Transfer the burfi to the tray.
  12. Level them with spoon and allow it to cool down a bit.
  13. Add chopped nuts on the top.
  14. Once it cool down a bit, cut them into pieces.
  15. Remove the pieces once it cools down completely.
  16. Store in airtight container.

Notes

It keeps well 2-3 days outside and upto one week if kept in fridge.

You can add 1 tsp cardamom powder for nice flavor.

I used 1 1/2 coconut to get 2 cups of grated coconut.

Increase or decrease the sugar according to your taste.

How to make Coconut Burfi with step by step pictures

Grate the coconut and take them in blender

Add the fried cashews and switch off the flame

Grease plate or tray with ghee

Transfer the burfi to the tray.

Level them with spoon and allow it to cool down a bit.
