Knol Khol Sambar Recipe | Kohlrabi Sambar

Knol Khol sambar is south indian sambar made with lentils and different spices.

Ingredients

  • Kohlrabi 300 grams
  • Small onions 10
  • Onions 1 small
  • Tomatoes 2 small
  • Red chilli powder 2 tsp
  • Coriander powder 2 tsp
  • Sambar powder 1 tbsp
  • Oil 2 tsp
  • Mustard ½ tsp
  • Urad dal ½ tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • Tamarind small lemon size
  • Coriander leaves to garnish

To Cook Dal

  • Toor dal ¾ cup
  • Water 2 cups
  • Turmeric powder ½ tsp
  • Hing ¼ tsp

Instructions

  • Wash the dal and take in pressure cooker.
  • Add water, turmeric powder, hing and pressure cook them for one whistle in medium and five minutes in low flame.
  • Once pressure releases open and mash the dal.
  • Wash and cut the knol khol as cubes
  • Take small lemon sized tamarind and extract it adding little hot water.
  • Heat oil and temper with mustard and urad dal.
  • Once it browns add the chopped onions and saute till transparent.
  • Then add the chopped tomatoes and saute till mushy.
  • Then add the cubed kohlrabi
  • Saute for 5 minutes and switch off the flame.
  • Add red chilli powder, coriander powder, sambar powder to cooked dal.
  • Now add the vegetable mixture to it.
  • Mix everything and add tamarind extract to it.
  • Pressure cook for 2-3 whistles. Once pressure releases open and garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Serve Knol khol sambar with hot rice.

Notes

From the cooked dal I take ½ cup for kids and use water for making rasam and use rest for making sambar
You can cook in kadai also. I find it easy to pressure cook them as it saves time.
