    Knol Khol Sambar Recipe | Kohlrabi Sambar

    Knol Khol Sambar Recipe | Kohlrabi Sambar recipe with step by step pictures and instructions. Knol Khol sambar is South Indian sambar made with Kohlrabi, lentils and different spices. We make sambar using different vegetables. Knol khol is one of the ignored vegetables and I have heard many people saying they don’t cook knol khol. It belongs to cabbage family and rich source of Vitamin C.

    I make sambar, kootu or poriyal using knol khol. This is my first recipe as part of A to Z Recipe Challenge facebook group where we need to post recipes in alphabetical order and letter for this month is K and I made this delicious and simple Kohlrabi Sambar.     Knol Khol Sambar Recipe | Kohlrabi Sambar

    Knol Khol sambar is south indian sambar made with lentils and different spices.
    Prep Time 10 minutes minutes
    Cook Time 20 minutes minutes
    Total Time 30 minutes minutes

    Ingredients

    • Kohlrabi 300 grams
    • Small onions 10
    • Onions 1 small
    • Tomatoes 2 small
    • Red chilli powder 2 tsp
    • Coriander powder 2 tsp
    • Sambar powder 1 tbsp
    • Oil 2 tsp
    • Mustard ½ tsp
    • Urad dal ½ tsp
    • Curry leaves few
    • Tamarind small lemon size
    • Coriander leaves to garnish

    To Cook Dal

    • Toor dal ¾ cup
    • Water 2 cups
    • Turmeric powder ½ tsp
    • Hing ¼ tsp

    Instructions

    • Wash the dal and take in pressure cooker.
    • Add water, turmeric powder, hing and pressure cook them for one whistle in medium and five minutes in low flame.
    • Once pressure releases open and mash the dal.
    • Wash and cut the knol khol as cubes
    • Take small lemon sized tamarind and extract it adding little hot water.
    • Heat oil and temper with mustard and urad dal.
    • Once it browns add the chopped onions and saute till transparent.
    • Then add the chopped tomatoes and saute till mushy.
    • Then add the cubed kohlrabi
    • Saute for 5 minutes and switch off the flame.
    • Add red chilli powder, coriander powder, sambar powder to cooked dal.
    • Now add the vegetable mixture to it.
    • Mix everything and add tamarind extract to it.
    • Pressure cook for 2-3 whistles. Once pressure releases open and garnish with coriander leaves.
    • Serve Knol khol sambar with hot rice.

    Notes

    From the cooked dal I take ½ cup for kids and use water for making rasam and use rest for making sambar
    You can cook in kadai also. I find it easy to pressure cook them as it saves time.

    How to make Kohlrabi Sambar with step by step pictures

    Wash the dal and take in pressure cooker.

    Saute for 5 minutes and switch off the flame.

    Now add the vegetable mixture to it.

    Mix everything and add tamarind extract to it.

    Pressure cook for 2-3 whistles. Once pressure releases open and garnish with coriander leaves.

    Serve Knol khol sambar with hot rice.

      A wonderful way to use knol knol or kohlrabi by making a sambar with it. I must admit I hardly ever use it much except in soups. Will give this recipe a try.

      One of our faourute sambhars. we love to add this veggie to BIsibele bhath too.. I make it without onion-tomato,, but I think I will try ur version sometime, Narmadha :)
