Kollu Rasam Recipe | Horse Gram Rasam Recipe

Kollu Rasam is variation of South Indian Rasam made with horse gram.

Ingredients

  • Kollu ¼ cup
  • Tomato 2
  • Tamarind 1 medium lemon size
  • Turmeric powder ½ tsp
  • Rasam Powder 2 tsp
  • Garlic 2-3 cloves
  • Coriander leaves to garnish
  • Water 2-3 cups

To Temper

  • Oil 1 tsp
  • Mustard ½ tsp
  • Urad dal ½ tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds ¼ tsp
  • Red chilli 2
  • Hing ¼ tsp
  • Curry leaves few

Instructions

  • Roast the horse gram slightly. I used the split and already roasted horse gram.
  • Add horse gram along with 1 ½ cup water in cooker.
  • Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. Once the pressure releases take the horse gram in mixer
  • Grind it to smooth paste
  • Mix it with cooked water and keep it ready.
  • Soak lemon sized tamarind in hot water and extract the juice.
  • Heat oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, fenugreek seeds and red chilli.
  • Once it browns add the curry leaves and hing.
  • Then add finely chopped tomatoes.
  • Saute it nicely till mushy.
  • Then add tamarind extract and allow it to boil.
  • Add turmeric powder and salt to it.
  • Once it boils add the cooked dal and water.
  • Add rasam powder and crushed garlic to it.
  • Once it comes to boil garnish with coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
  • Serve it as soup or with hot rice.

Notes

Use freshly grounded pepper and jeera instead of rasam powder.
My aunt split and roasted the horse gram and gave to me. So I used directly. You can roast them slightly before cooking.
You can mash the horse gram using masher too instead of grinding in mixer.
Adjust the amount of water according to thickness required.
This can be served as soup or can be served with hot rice.
