My mother always make horse gram rasam or porridge when we have cold/cough. Rasam is one of the most comfort food when we are not well as each ingredient used has its own health benefits. Jeera, pepper along with horse gram helps to soothe the throat during cough. I used my homemade rasam powder to make this rasam but freshly grounded masala adds more taste. Monday again and theme for this week in Foodie Monday Bloghop group is #226GrandmaRemedies suggested by me. I wanted to learn homemade remedies we do naturally in home as I always look for such recipes for my kids. Let’s see how to make this healthy and delicious kollu rasam.

  9. Then add finely chopped tomatoes.
  10. Saute it nicely till mushy.
  11. Then add tamarind extract and allow it to boil.
  12. Add turmeric powder and salt to it.
  13. Once it boils add the cooked dal and water.
  14. Add rasam powder and crushed garlic to it.
  15. Once it comes to boil garnish with coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
  16. Serve it as soup or with hot rice.

Notes

Use freshly grounded pepper and jeera instead of rasam powder.

My aunt split and roasted the horse gram and gave to me. So I used directly. You can roast them slightly before cooking.

You can mash the horse gram using masher too instead of grinding in mixer.

Adjust the amount of water according to thickness required.

This can be served as soup or can be served with hot rice.
