Tomato Rasam | Thakali Rasam | Easy Tomato Rasam recipe with step by step pictures and instructions. Learn how to make easy and simple tomato rasam. Rasam is one of the south Indian food made almost every day in many homes. My mom makes rasam almost everyday or alternative days. I follow the same as my daughter always ask Rasam rice only. It is one of the most comforting meal when we fall ill too.
There are many variations of making Rasam. I am sharing one of the simple way of making tomato rasam with handful of ingredients. We use more tomatoes and less tamarind for this rasam. You can completely skip tamarind too and increase the tomatoes used. I used my homemade rasam powder to make this rasam.

Ingredients
- Tomatoes 2 medium
- Tamarind small ball 1/2 cup extracted
- Water 2 cups
- Salt 1 tsp or as required
- Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
- Asaefoetida 1/4 tsp
- Rasam powder 2 tsp
- Garlic 3-4 pods
- Curry leaves handful
- Coriander leaves handful
- Oil 2 tsp
- Mustard 1/2 tsp
- Urad dal 1/2 tsp
- Red chilli 2
Instructions
- Take two medium tomatoes and chop them finely.
- Take small lemon sized tamarind and boil them in water
- Extract tamarind and keep it ready.
- Crush the garlic in hand mortar.
- Heat oil and temper with mustard, urad dal and red chillies.
- Once it browns add the finely chopped tomatoes.
- Saute nicely till tomatoes turn mushy
- Then add the prepared tamarind extract
- Then add 2 cups of water. Adjust the consistency as you require.
- Now add turmeric powder,asaefoetida, rasam powder and crushed garlic.
- Allow it to boil nicely.
- Switch off the flame and garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves.
Notes
You can grind the tomatoes and add to rasam
You can skip tamarind and add one more tomato
How to make Tomato Rasam with step by step pictures

Saute nicely till tomatoes turn mushy
Then add the prepared tamarind extract

Now add turmeric powder,asaefoetida, rasam powder and crushed garlic. I forgot to add garlic and added it later.
Allow it to boil nicely.
Switch off the flame and garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves.
Serve with hot rice
