Savoury Poda Pitha | Savoury Rice Cake from Odisha

Savoury Poda Pitha prepared using rice, urad dal, spices and veggies.

Ingredients

  • Rice 1 cup
  • Urad dal ½ cup
  • Carrot 1 medium grated
  • Capsicum ½ cup chopped
  • Salt as required
  • Green chilli 2
  • Ginger 1 tsp finely chopped
  • Grated coconut 2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves few finely chopped
  • Coriander leaves 2 tbsp finely chopped
  • Cumin ½ tsp
  • Ghee/oil for brushing

Instructions

  • Wash and soak rice and urad dal for 3-4 hours.
  • Drain the water and take in a mixer.
  • Grind to smooth paste adding little water.
  • Transfer to the bowl
  • Add salt and mix. Allow it to ferment for 6-8 hours or overnight.
  • Add capsicum, finely chopped green chilli, ginger, grated coconut, cumin, curry leaves and coriander leaves.
  • Mix to form a thick batter. Can add few drops of water to adjust the consistency if it is too thick.
  • Grease the pan with ghee or oil.
  • Pour the batter to the pan.
  • Place the pan in stove now.
  • Close the lid and slow cook for 15- 20 minutes.
  • Once it is cooked, carefully flip the pitha.
  • Cook again for 8-10 minutes.
  • Savoury poda pitha is ready. Serve it with any curry or you can have them as such too.

Notes

You can add any vegetables of your choice.
Allow it to cook in slow flame. It will be slightly burnt on the top.
For the sweet version, you can add jaggery and coconut instead of vegetables.
You can also bake this in oven for 35-40 minutes till it is cooked.
