Cook the dal with turmeric powder and asafoetida for one whistle and simmer for 5 minutes. Mash the dal and keep it aside
Dry roast the ingredients given under roast and roast till nice aroma comes. Cool it and transfer to mixer and grind to powder.
Heat oil and temper with mustard, urad dal and curry leaves.
Once it sputters, add the onions and slit green chillies and saute for 2-3 minutes.
Then add the tomatoes and saute till it is mushy.
You can add vegetables if you are adding at this stage and allow it to cook before adding tamarind extract.
Then add the tamarind extract, salt and little water and allow it to boil for 2 minutes.
Now add the cooked dal and spice powder.
Add water as mixture will tend to thicken and allow it to boil nicely.
Once it boils, add the jaggery powder and ghee and allow it to boil for few seconds.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.
