Rava Upma is one the popular breakfast recipes from South India made with Rava/Semolina/Sooji.

Ingredients

  • Rava 1 cup
  • Oil 2 tsp
  • Ghee 1 tbsp optional
  • Mustard ½ tsp
  • Urad dal ¼ tsp
  • Cumin seeds ½ tsp
  • Chana dal 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves few
  • Onion 1 medium
  • Green chilli 1 big
  • Salt as required
  • Water 3 cups

Instructions

  • Dry roast the rava till golden. Skip this step if you use roasted rava.
  • Heat oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, chana dal, cumin seeds, and curry leaves.
  • Once it splutters, add finely chopped onions and slit green chilli.
  • Saute nicely and add salt.
  • Then add the required water and allow it to boil.
  • Once it boils, add the roasted rava slowly and mixing continuously. keep the flame in low while doing this to avoid forming lumps.
  • Mix it continuously till all water is absorbed.
  • Add ghee at this stage.
  • Give a quick stir and switch off the flame.
  • Piping hot rava upma is ready. Serve it with coconut chutney/sambar.

Notes

I use double roasted rava so skip roasting most of the time.
You can roast the rava and keep it ready to save time
You can add some veggies and small tomato too.
Add some grated ginger for additional flavor and garnish with coriander leaves
We love the consistency of the upma to be soft and smooth. You can reduce the water to 2.5 cups if you want it grainy.
Adding ghee elevates the flavor of the upma so don't skip it.
