Sambar rice recipe | Sambar sadam | Easy Sambar sadam recipe for kids with step by step pictures and instructions. Sambar sadam is delicious and healthy one pot meal which can be cooked within 30 minutes. Simple and easy to go recipe which requires only basic ingredients from kitchen. I make this dish at least once in a week for my kids as they like them. This is simple version of bisi bele bath without any grinding work.
You can cook the rice and dal separately and then add sambar and mix them. But I like this one pot version which is very quick and easy to make. I always use equal amount of rice and dal for this recipe and it yields best results. This is mild spicy perfect for kids. You can add any vegetables of your choice and serve it along with chips or appalam.

Ingredients
- Rice 1/2 cup
- Toor dal 1/2 cup
- Water 4 cups
- Oil 2 tsp
- Onions 1
- Tomatoes 1 big
- Carrot 1
- Beans 1/2 cup
- Tamarind extract 3 tbsp
- Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
- Sambar powder 2 tsp
- Mustard 1/2 tsp
- Urad dal 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves few
- Hing 1/4 tsp
Instructions
- Soak rice and toor dal for 30 minutes
- Wash, drain the water and keep it ready.
- Heat oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, Hing and curry leaves.
- Once it browns add the finely chopped onions and saute for one minute.
- Then add tomatoes and saute till mushy
- Now add the chopped vegetables and saute for few minutes till it shrinks.
- Now add salt, turmeric powder and sambar powder.
- Then add water and tamarind extract.
- Once it boils, add ghee, rice and dal. Check the seasoning.
- Close the cooker and pressure cook for one whistle and then in low flame for 15 minutes and switch off.
- Once pressure releases open the cooker and mix. Drizzle ghee on top if required.
- Sambar sadam is ready.
- Serve hot with chips, appalam or potato fry.
