Thala Guli Recipe | Srilankan Sesame Balls/Rolls recipe with step by step pictures and instructions. Thala Guli is Srilankan sweet recipe made with coconut, sesame seeds and jaggery. It is one of the very popular sweets available locally in Sri Lanka. Thala means sesame seeds in Sinhalese. This may closely resemble the sesame seeds ladoo we make but taste and procedure is little different.

One of the quick and simple recipe to make and it hardly takes 20 minutes to make this delicious sweet. This is one of my mom’s favorite sweet. Traditionally they use mortar and pestle to pound the sesame seeds and roll them as balls or cylindrical rolls. You can use fresh or desiccated coconut for the recipe. Desiccated coconut gives more shelf life.

Ingredients

  • Sesame seeds 1/2 cup
  • Desiccated coconut 1/2 cup
  • Powdered Jaggery 1/3 cup
  • Salt a pinch

Instructions

  1. Dry roast sesame seeds till it pops up.
  2. Dry roast the coconut till slightly brown.
  3. Take sesame seeds, coconut and grated jaggery in a mixer.
  4. Pulse them 2-3 times till combined.
  5. Take the mixture in bowl.
  6. Shape them as small balls or cylindrical rolls.
  7. Repeat the same for rest of the mixture.
  8. Thala Guli/Sesame rolls is ready.

Notes

Traditionally they use kithul jaggery in Srilanka for making this sweet. You can use any type of jaggery.

Shape them as you wish

I used fresh coconut and roasted them nicely. Desiccated coconut is preferred for more shelf life.

How to make Thala Guli with step by step pictures

Dry roast sesame seeds till it pops up. Dry roast the coconut till slightly brown.

  • Such an easy to make recipe that doesn't take much time. Perfect for the upcoming Makar Sankranti as during that time we have to have the combination of til and gud.

  • Wow one more til gur recipe for sankranti. Til gur balls sounds so simple and easy to make. We have to dry roast the til and coconut only, otherwise you can call it a no cook recipe. I am sure it tastes delectable.
