Fish biryani is made with marinated and shallow fried fish fillets. We always make biryani with chicken, mutton or veggies. Next time try this flavorful, simple and delicious fish biryani. You can make this in less than one hour. I used seer fish and removed the bones after shallow frying. You can use boneless fish fillets too.

Its been long time since I posted some non veg recipe though I make them atleast once or twice in a week. This recipe was in my drafts for long time and finally I am posting it. I love sea food very much and this is one of my favorite biryani recipe. I first tasted fish biryani in my friend Priya’s home in Bangalore and it was so delicious. From then I have been making fish biryani regularly. We can use prawns in the same recipe too. Basically you can use your regular method of making biryani and add shallow fried fish pieces in them to make fish biryani. Let’s check out how to make fish biryani.

Ingredients

  • Fish 500 grams
  • Basmati rice 1 1/2 cup
  • Onion 2 big sliced
  • Ginger garlic paste 2 tbsp
  • Curd 1/4 cup
  • Green chilli 2 slit
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder 1 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala 3/4 tsp
  • Cumin powder 1/2 tsp
  • Salt as required
  • Mint leaves 1/3 cup
  • Water 3 cups
  • Lemon juice from half lemon(small)
  • To marinate
  • Salt 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder 1 tsp
  • Ginger garlic paste 1 tsp
  • Oil for shallow frying
  • To temper
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Ghee 1 tbsp
  • Cloves 4
  • Cardamom 2
  • Bay leaves 3
  • Cinnamon two small sticks
  • Kalpasi 1 tsp

Instructions

  1. Soak rice for 30 minutes. Wash and drain the water and keep it ready.
  2. Wash and clean the fish. Add salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and ginger garlic paste to fish .
  3. Mix everything till fish is nicely marinated with masala and keep aside for 15 minutes.
  4. Heat oil in a pan.
  5. Add the fish pieces and shallow fry them.
  6. Flip the fish pieces and fry them till golden.
  7. Remove the bones and keep the fish pieces ready.
  8. Heat oil and ghee
  9. Temper with cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, Bay leaves and kalpasi
  10. Add sliced onions and slit green chillies and saute for one minute.
  11. Now add ginger garlic paste and saute till raw smell goes.
  12. Then add mint leaves and saute till it shrinks
  13. Now add curd and saute
  14. Then add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala, cumin powder and salt.
  15. Saute till it is nicely combined.
  16. Then add washed rice and give a quick saute
  17. Now add water and lemon juice.
  18. Finally add the fish pieces and check for salt and close the lid.
  19. Pressure cook for one whistle and then keep in low flame for 5 minutes and switch off the flame.
  20. Release the pressure and open the cooker. Add ghee and mix gently
  21. Serve fish biryani hot with raita or curry.

Notes

You can use boneless fish fillets too

After opening the pressure cooker, fluff it off with fork and gently mix without breaking the fish pieces.

Adjust the spices according to your preference.

Use good quality long grain basmati rice

How to make Fish Biryani with step by step pictures

Soak rice for 30 minutes. Wash and drain the water and keep it ready. Wash and clean the fish. Add salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and ginger garlic paste to fish .

Heat oil in a pan. Add the fish pieces and shallow fry them.

Saute till it is nicely combined.

Then add washed rice and give a quick saute

Now add water and lemon juice.

Finally add the fish pieces and check for salt and close the lid.

Pressure cook for one whistle and then keep in low flame for 5 minutes and switch off the flame. Release the pressure and open the cooker. Add ghee and mix gently
