Tomato Biryani Recipe | Tomato Biryani in pressure cooker | Tomato Rice Recipe with step by step pictures and instructions. Tomato Biryani is delicious one pot meal prepared using tomatoes. There are quite a different ways to prepare Tomato rice or thakkali sadam. This one pot meal is prepared using pressure cooker with easily available ingredients. I don’t generally add vegetables but you can add some green peas, soya chunks or anything of your choice.

I make this atleast once a week and pack for my kids lunch box too. Serve it with simple raita and your lunch is sorted out. Hope everyone is safe and staying inside home. Ingredients

  • Tomato 5 big or 350 grams
  • Rice 1 1/2 cups
  • Onion 2 medium
  • Green chilli 1
  • Ginger Garlic Paste 1 tbsp
  • Red chilli powder 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin powder 1/4 tsp
  • Salt 1.5 tsp or as required
  • Mint leaves 1/2 cup
  • Coriander leaves 2 tbsp
  • Curd 2 tbsp
  • Water 2 1/4 cup
  • To Temper
  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Ghee 1 tbsp
  • Bay leaf 2
  • Cloves 3
  • Cardamom 2
  • Cinnamon small stick
  • Star Anise 2

Instructions

  1. Soak basmati rice for 30 minutes. Wash and drain the water and keep it ready.
  2. Slice the onions, gomato, green chillies and prepare the ginger garlic paste.
  3. Heat oil, ghee and temper with whole spices given under to temper.
  4. Once it browns add the sliced onions and green chillies
  5. Then add ginger garlic paste and saute till raw smell goes
  6. Then add the chopped tomatoes and saute for 5 minutes.
  7. Now add the mint leaves and coriander leaves saute.
  8. Then add curd to it.
  9. Next add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, coriander powder, cumin powder and salt.
  10. Saute nicely till tomatoes are mushy and then add water.
  11. When the water boils, add the rice and check the seasoning.
  12. Close the pressure cook and cook in medium flame for one whistle and slow flame for 5 minutes.
  13. Wait for the pressure to settle down and open the lid. Gently mix it up.
  14. Tomato rice is ready. Serve it with simple raita.

Notes

I use 1:1.5 cups of water for basmati rice and 1:2 ratio for normal rice.

You can add green peas, soya chunks or any vegetables of your choice.

I always cook 1-2 minutes extra since kids rice to be cooked fully not very fluffy.

How to make Tomato Biryani with step by step pictures
