Me and hubby loves to eat onions raw so I always use it as such for stuffing. But you can always saute the onions with spices and use it for stuffing. It can be made quickly whenever you have some left over dough.  Key to get soft paratha is kneading the dough nicely till it is soft and pliable. Adjust the spices according to your choice. Skip green chilli when making for kids.

Onion Paratha is delicious paratha made with stuffed onion and spices.

Ingredients

  • Wheat flour 1 cup
  • Salt as required
  • Oil 1 tbsp
  • Water as required
  • Stuffing
  • Onion 1 cup finely chopped
  • Salt as required
  • Green chilli 1
  • Red chilli powder 3/4 tsp
  • Cumin powder 1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
  • Amchur powder 1/2 tsp
  • Oil/Ghee for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Take wheat flour in bowl, add salt and 1 tbsp oil.
  2. Mix it nicely with hands
  3. Then add water little by little and knead to form dough.
  4. Add little oil now and knead for 7-10 minutes till dough is soft and smooth.
  5. Cover and keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  6. Finely chop the onions, add salt to it and keep it aside for 5 minutes
  7. It will leave water. Squeeze the onions to remove all water
  8. Then add finely chopped green chilli, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder and amchur powder.
  9. Mix it together till everything is combined.
  10. Onion stuffing is ready.
  11. Take small balls, roll them as small circle and place the stuffing.
  12. Bring all the edges and seal them
  13. Now roll them like chapati sprinkling little flour.
  14. Heat kadai and place the rolled paratha. Drizzle oil on the top.
  15. Flip them and cook on both sides till golden.
  16. Repeat the same for rest of the dough..
  17. Serve them hot with raita, curd, pickle or any gravy

Notes

Finely chop the onions so it is easy to roll.

Prepare the stuffing just before you roll them as onions may leave water.

If you don't like raw onions you can saute and use for stuffing.

You can use chaat masala instead of amchur powder.

Add finely chopped coriander leaves along with onions.

Add ghee while cooking for more flavor.

How to make Onion Paratha with step by step pictures

  • A simple paratha straight after my own heart! I'd love to try this out. I'm sure this will taste fabulous. A couple of these parathas with some raita or plain curd - and I would be in food heaven. :)
  • Of all the parathas, my husband loves onion parathas, and he too loves to eat raw onions with any thign from thayirsaadam to khichdi.. such a beautiful paratha, Narmadha.. pass me the plate pls
  • Pyaaz Parathas are a hit at our place too. They taste so good when piping hot and smeared with ghee, with all the right accompaniments as laid out by you. Absolutely delish breakfast or brunch option.
  • I can imagine the crunch of the onions in this paratha even as I type this comment. This recipe is such as lifesaver on days when you run out of vegetables (a frequent occurrence in these lockdown times) . Simplicity is the way to go and you nailed it.
  • As such I'm not a big lover of raw onion but my hubby loves them. I've not tried onion paratha but will try them out as your preparation looks very tempting. Sometimes a plain sabji or dal requires a bit of flavorful accompaniment and these onion parathas are just right.
